the hottest new thing in the vape market is box mods. Currently all e-cigarette companies are in the process of releasing one, if not multiple, box mods. Even companies that never manufactured vape mods in the past, like Aspire and Kanger, are getting in on the action with the Kanger Kbox Mod and the Aspire ESP mod.

There are so many different box mods on the market that shopping for one can be a bit overwhelming; that’s why I created this list of the best box mods for 2015 to help cut through the clutter.

What is a Box Mod?

In the world of vaping a box mod is pretty much any device that is not in the shape of a tube. Many box mods are shaped like a box, but now vape mods come in a variety of different shapes. Some very popular mods like the ZEN ZNA look nothing like a box. Confusing, right?

Most box mods are regulated devices with variable wattage or voltage power outputs, but you can also purchase mechanical box mods. For the purpose of this list we will only be talking about regulated or digital box mods.

Regulated device on the market are now predominantly variable wattage, meaning you can adjust the power output in watts. Smaller or cheaper vape mods may only reach an output of 15 to 20 watts, while other, more expensive, mods can output 150 watts or more!

A 150 Watt Vape Mod?

That’s right, vape mods can now output 150 or even 260 watts of power. The majority of vapers will never need this much power, so it’s really just for show. For an average vaper, a 30 watt vape mod will have more than enough power.

Since more power usually means more money, I will divide this best mod list up into four categories.

• Beginner – 20 watt mods
• Intermediate – 30 watt mods
• Advanced – 50 watt mods
• Expert – 150 watt plus mods.

The first box mod on the list is the original 20 watt Eleaf iStick. This mod started the mini box mod craze resulting in every manufacturer releasing their own compact box mod. Because the Eleaf iStick was an affordable, good looking, box mod, everyone wanted one.

The Eleaf iStick 20w is still a great device for people new to vape mods who don’t require a lot of power or the ability to sub-ohm. If you combine the iStick with an Aspire Nautilus mini, you have a new age e-cigarette starter kit. However, now it may be better to consider spending an extra 5 bucks to get the upgraded iStick 30w listed in the intermediate section.

iTaste MVP 20w

The iTaste MVP 20w by Innokin is box mod and a portable power bank in one, making it an extremely useful device. Its internal 2600mah battery powers the device and can also be used to charge other electronic devices via a USB output port.

The MVP series of vape mods by Innokin are known to be durable and useful e-cigarettes. The iTaste MVP 20w is a variable voltage and variable wattage device. You can adjust the output power from 6.0 to 20.0 watts or 3.0 to 7.5 volts. The MVP 20w also has features such a 32-bit ARM microprocessor and VDC power output to provide users with a smooth and consistent vape.

Joyetech eGrip

The Joyetech eGrip is a unique device because it’s one of the first all-in-one vape mods. Instead of buying a separate atomizer to go with your box mod, the eGrip has a built in tank atomizer with replaceable coils.

The built-in tank can hold up to 3.6ml’s of e-juice. To refill it simply pop open a flap on the side of the mod to reveal the fill hole. You can even adjust the airflow on the eGrip by twisting a small screw on the side of the device.

The eGrip has a built in 1500mah battery which will last a decent amount of time when powering the included 1.5ohm replacement coil heads. Surprisingly for being an all-in-one device the Joytech egrip is quite small. This is a great box mod for a beginning vaper or for a more advanced vaper to use as a travel or back up mod.

Intermediate – 30 Watt Box Mod

Eleaf iStick 30

The Eleaf iStick 30 is an upgraded version of the original iStick mod with increased power output and the ability to fire sub-ohm atomizers. The look of the iStick 30 is almost identical to the first version. The exception is a lip that extends over the edge, this is so 22mm wide atomizers won’t stick over the edge.

The improvements over the original iStick make the new iStick 30 a perfect box mod for the majority of vapers. Now you can find atomizers as low as 0.4ohms with an adjustable output power from 5 to 30 watts. The best part is that the price isn’t much more than the original. It’s definitely worth it.

iTaste MVP 3.0

The iTaste MVP 3.0 is the latest box mod in Innokin’s MVP series. When compared to the MVP 20w, version 3.0 can output up to 30 watts and fire atomizers down to 0.4ohms. It also has a larger 3800mah internal battery that can be used to charge other electronics.

The main downside the iTaste MVP 3.0 is its size. The mod measures 4’’ tall, 1-3/4’’ wide and 7/8’’ deep, making it a bit too large for some people to hold comfortably. I personally feel that it’s too big, but I tend to prefer smaller, more compact, vape mods.

If you want a huge internal battery and don’t mind the size, go with the MVP 3.0. If a large box mod is a problem for you, go with something else.

Sigelei Mini 30w

I’ve had my Sigelei Mini 30w for about a month now, and I’ve been using it nonstop. It’s a great little box mod and comes with a cool rubber case that softens the somewhat sharp edges of this very boxy box mod. I really like the battery cover on the Sigelei Mini 30w. It’s positioned on the side of the mod and held in place with a few small magnets. Unlike most other box mods, with back battery covers that can shift while you grip the device, the Sigelei Mini 30’s cover never shifts and is super easy to remove and replace.

The Sigelei Mini 30 can even be operated in a DC-DC. This makes it act more like a mechanical mod and can fire atomizers even lower than 0.3ohms. Overall the Sigelei Mini 30w is a great mini box mod. I just wish the corners were more rounded and it was a bit smaller.

Advanced – 50 Watt Box Mod

Eleaf iStick 50

The Eleaf iStick 50 is currently the most powerful and largest device in the iStick series. As I write this, it’s the most sought after box mod. Many vendors are sold out, and users seem to really enjoy the device.

Even though the Eleaf iStick 50 is the largest of the iStick mods, it’s still a fairly compact device, and the rounded corners make it very comfortable to grip and fire. The LED screen is positioned front and center, with two adjustment buttons located right above so you can easily adjust the output power.

The power source on the iStick 50 is a large built in Li-Ion battery with a very generous 4400mah capacity. If you vape above 1.0ohms, this battery will easily last you all day. Sub-Ohm vapers will like the iStick 50’s ability to fire all the way down to 0.2ohms.

I really don’t have anything negative to say about the Eleaf iStick 50; it has everything you need at a great price point.

IPV Mini 2

The IPV Mini 2 is an upgraded version of the IPV MIni mod by Pionerr4you. The original IPV Mini is a great box mod but it only outputs up to 30 watts of power. The only reason I didn’t list it in the “30 Watt” category is because I was going to list the IPV Mini 2 here.

The IPV Mini 2 utilizes a Yihi SX330V2C chip set making it quite a bit more powerful than the original. Its capable of outputting between 5 to 70 watts or power making it the most powerful mod in the “Advanced – 50 watt” category. It has a floating 510 center pin and can fire atomizers as low as 0.2ohms and as high as 3.0ohms.

Just don’t let the “Mini” in its title fool you, its one of the largest Mini box mods but it’s also the most powerful. If you like a lot of power but find the dual-18650 vape mods too big the IPV MIni 2 would be a great choice.

IPV2, IPV2s, & IPV2x

The IPV2 is another exceptionally popular box mod made by Pioneer4you; they now offer a few upgraded models, including the IPV2s and IPV2x. Here are the main differences between the three versions:

• IPV2 – Original 50 Watt box mod
• IPV2x – 50 or 60 watt box mod with profile memory
• IPV2s – 60 Watt box mod that can be upgraded to 70 watts, Tactile buttons

You may simply want to base your decision on which one to get by the price. If you need more power than 50 watts, you may just want to purchase the IPV3, which can output up to 150 watts of power.

The IPV2 requires an 18650 battery for power and uses a SX330 chip-set. One unique feature of the IPV2 is that it has two firing switches, the usual button and a touch sensor firing switch that senses when your finger is touching it.

Expert – 150 Watt Box Mod

Sigelei 150w

If you’re looking for a lot of power but don’t want to break the bank, the Sigelei 150w mod is an excellent option. This box mod can output between 10 and 150 watts of pure vaping power for as little as 100 bucks. It requires two high discharge 18650 batteries and uses a YiHI chipset.

The Sigelei 150w mod is constructed with an aluminum body and can fire atomizers as low as 0.1ohms. The firing switch is nice and large, making it quite comfortable to fire. A back panel held in place by magnets eliminates the need for a screwdriver to change out the batteries.

An “ONI” edition of the Sigelei 150 watt mod that looks pretty cool was just released; you may want to check it out.

IPV 3

The IPV3 is a viable option if you need a lot of power; it’s capable of up to 150 watts right out of the box, however it can also be upgraded to 180 watts. The device is made from aluminum and requires two 18650 batteries with a continuous discharge rate of 30 amps or more.

The IPV3 uses the latest SX330 V3S module chip and can fire atomizers down to 0.1ohms. Even though the device has a touch sensor firing switch built in to the box, initially, it will not be operational. Functionality may be added with later firmware updates. I believe this is because the switch can’t currently handle the 150 watt output.

All of the IPV2 mods have received great reviews so far, so I expect the IPV3 to be another high quality device.
